| Weekly soccer column: Choice of Bradley no reason to panic | | Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 1:24:29 PM by Blog57 Team | | And his appointment as the new U.S. men's national team coach -- perhaps a temporary, stop-gap move, perhaps not -- has left most soccer observers distinctly underwhelmed. The reaction to Bradley's hiring probably says more about those of us who follow the sport than anything else. What did we expect? Well, we expected U.S. Soccer would hire Juergen Klinsmann. The former coach of the German national team was the consensus choice for the job among fans, journalists and U.S. Soccer officials. Although other names were bandied about, no one else was seriously on the radar screen. So U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati went after Klinsmann -- hard -- in an effort to fulfill those expectations. It was never particularly clear whether Klinsmann really wanted the job.... | |

| | | Honesty, strategy, talent built soccer success | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 11:18:37 PM by Blog57 Team | | GROTON -- For an idea of just how large an impact Dick Nyman has had on boys' soccer at Groton Dunstable Regional High School, look at the Chenelle family of Dunstable. Twenty-five years ago, Kevin Chenelle played for Nyman when the school's soccer program was in its infancy. This season, Kevin's son Chris is the Crusaders' leading scorer. "My dad can relate to all the things that he says," Chris said. "He still has a lot of the same sayings and everything, a lot of the same feedback after the games." That's because Dick Nyman essentially is Groton Dunstable soccer. The program was only four years old when he took over in 1977, and he has coached all 30 seasons since, taking the squad to 25 postseason tournaments and raising the game from what he called "a vague resemblance to soccer" to a Division 1 program that was bumped to the top ranks because of the strength of the program , not the size of the school .... | |

In FIFA Soccer 07, this year's addition to Electronic Arts' blockbuster soccer franchise, a new physics and data-driven engine allows the players to move less like robots and more like individuals with their own playing styles. That's because Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.'s upcoming PlayStation 3 next-generation video game consoles can process a lot more information on each athlete's unique traits than current-generation consoles, the game's senior producer said in an interview. "With the processing power of the next-generation platforms we can now get a level of physics on the player that we couldn't get before," said EA's Andrew Wilson....

Earlier this season in Fallon, the Raiders controlled both sides of the field for a 10-0 victory. Fallon falls to 0-9 and hosts Spanish Springs today at 3 p.m. at the Ed Arciniega Athletic Complex. "We are not a team that can play well without a high level of energy and intensity, and we didn't do that on Saturday," Lattin said....
