Horrified by snow's disappearance at their European venues, two of Canada's top Olympic skiers are vowing to do their part in halting global warming's snowballing effect. Flanked by environmental activist David Suzuki, skiers Thomas Grandi and Sara Renner said they've committed to do their own personal emissions trading and reductions to offset the greenhouse gases produced by their frequent travels. "In the course of the years, I've seen the winter really change and I've seen the decline in the amount of snow and warmer temperatures," said Grandi, adding some races this season have been cancelled in Europe, even those held on rapidly-shrinking glaciers. Downhill skier Grandi and Renner, his wife and a cross-country competitor, say they've reduced CO2 emissions in their daily lives and will put their money into green energy projects such as wind and solar farms....

Fortress Mountains hit major moguls in its opening date, says the province, which has ordered the ski resort to stop selling season passes. An order to cease marketing passes was sent out Nov. 3 but on Wednesday afternoon the resort, operated by Banff Rail Co. Inc., was still offering them online, noted Wilson Smith, spokesman for Alberta Government Services. We would like to see them comply with our order as soon as possible consumers are at risk, he said, adding the hills opening date of Dec. 1 doesnt appear realistic. The province also told Fortress to stop advertising services it cant deliver, particularly after the resort failed to do so last year after the current owners first took it over, said Wilson. They said theyd be open by early December but didnt until January and we want to prevent that from happening this year, he said....

U.S. resorts go 'greener': Heavenly Mountain Resort among several ski areas making the change

Visitors to many ski areas this winter will find cleaner air and better views of mountain landscapes. Not only are ski resorts pushing legislation in Washington to combat global warming, at least 45 resorts in 14 states from coast-to-coast are using clean energy for some of their operations. Sixteen are getting 100 percent of their power from green energy sources including wind, hydroelectric, solar, bio-mass and geothermal. "I think we're a platform industry. We have a bully pulpit to operate from. When you think of global warming the first thing you think of is snowfall and wintertime and how that changes," said Michael Berry, president of the National Ski Areas Association. In August of this year, Heavenly Mountain Resort's parent company Vail Resorts announced it will offset 100 percent of its energy use by purchasing wind energy credits....

SUMMIT COUNTY - Now that a few local chairlifts are up and running for the season, members of Summit County's ski clubs have gotten back to doing what they do best - making turns. Team Summit and Quantum Sports Club (QSC), both of which have been busy with dryland training for several weeks, recently took to the slopes in preparation for the upcoming race season. "This is probably the most critical time of year for training and building endurance," Team Summit's Taggart Spenst said while skiing at Copper Mountain on Friday. "As for racing, it's not as important. Right now, I'm focusing on the quantity of my runs instead of the quality." Not only is October a key month for ski training, it's also a good time for teaching, according to QSC head coach John Leffler, whose team has been free skiing at A-Basin for more than a week....

Today's snow comes a little ahead of schedule, but that doesn't seem to bother the local ski and snowboard retailers. Ty Perry reports on what the early flurries mean for the ski industry. The early snow is a blessing for the ski resorts as they look to start the season sometime in the next month, but the retailers just hope to see a lot more days like today. Tim Woodard, snowboarder: "More snow means more fun." Jaxon Landon, Sled Shed manager: "Good start to the year." Skiers, snowboarders, and snow enthusiasts got a nice surprise this morning. Tim Woodard, snowboarder: "I was excited. Kind of neat to see snow so early in the season." Employees of the Sled Shed in Rexburg were also excited about the early snow. Jaxon Landon manages the store, and he says the year's first snow always makes for a busy day....

THE LEAVES haven't even changed color yet in parts of the country, but ski resorts are already getting ready to open. In Colorado, Loveland and Arapahoe Basin are making artificial snow around the clock, while Silverton Mountain has already recorded 3 feet of natural snowfall from a late September storm. And Ski Magazine's October issue has come out with its annual list of the top 10 resorts, with separate lists for ice warriors in the East and powder fiends in the West.
