| The Sunday Times - Football | | Posted Sunday, November 19, 2006 1:10:48 PM by Blog57 Team | | Of course Hoddle has a moronic world view ? he is a football coach, not Alexis de Tocqueville! He should be required only to know more about tactics and player-management than the rest of us; the rest of his antediluvian belief system we can cheerfully dismiss with a wave of the hand (or some other action of the hand, it?s up to you). We have become too sensitive, too quick to punish people who think differently from the rest of us, when their views do not matter a damn. .... | |

| | | College Football: The Man Behind the Mask | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 7:11:57 AM by Blog57 Team | | Loyd Carr was talking about his mask. The Michigan football coach was in a corridor at Crisler Arena on a recent Monday, having just turned in a characteristically arid, monotone and sound-bite- free performance at his weekly press conference. Now, out in the hallway, unmoored from the lectern, he sprang to life, reenacting a moment from the previous week when he'd donned a hideous mask, sneaked up on one of his players and scared the bejesus out of him. ... | | | Tragedy reduces football issues to instant insignificance | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 11:24:33 AM by Blog57 Team | | The unacceptable ignominy of the University of Miami football team's 5-4 record stopped mattering Tuesday night as surely as a heart stopped beating. The tenuous future of unpopular coach Larry Coker ceased to be the least bit important, at least for a little while. The injury to quarterback Kyle Wright's thumb retreated to instant insignificance. Hopefully, too, an agitated, jeering, dissatisfied Hurricanes Nation will pause and demand of itself today a moment of silence, or at least perspective, in this rancorous season. Just a moment, please? Bryan Pata died. Violently, by a bullet, inside his apartment in Kendall. He was a UM defensive tackle, a senior, down to his last few college games, before somebody took even those away. He was not a star.... | |

| | | Hutchinson's football winning streak continues | | Posted Wednesday, October 25, 2006 7:18:49 PM by Blog57 Team | | HUTCHINSON, Minn. One of the longest-running high school football streaks in Minnesota just got longer. Hutchinson beat Willmar 31-to-3 at Willmar in sectional quarterfinals last night. The win improved the Tigers' record to 5-and-4 and guaranteed the team another non-losing season. Hutchinson hasn't had a losing season since 1971 -- a span of 35 years. Coach Andy Rostberg says it's quite an accomplishment. He says schools sometimes struggle to put a few winning seasons together, so Hutchinson's streak is something special. Hutchinson plays undefeated Marshall in the Section 2, Class 4A semis on Saturday. Information from: Joel Niemeyer, KDUZ/KARP, http://www.kduz.com .... | |

| | | 7 football stadiums target of dirty bombs, Web site claims | | Posted Thursday, October 19, 2006 3:12:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | WASHINGTON - A Web site is claiming that seven National Football League stadiums will be hit with radiological dirty bombs this weekend, but the government on Wednesday expressed doubts about the threat. The warning, posted last Thursday, was part of an ongoing Internet conversation titled "New Attack on America Be Afraid." It mentioned NFL stadiums in New York, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Oakland and Cleveland, where games are scheduled for this weekend. The Homeland Security Department alerted authorities and stadium owners in those cities, as well as the NFL, of the Web message but said the threat was being viewed "with strong skepticism." Officials at the NCAA, which oversees college athletics, said they also had been notified. Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said there was no intelligence that indicated such an attack was imminent, and he said the alert was issued "out of an abundance of caution." "The department strongly encourages the public to continue to go about their plans, including attending events that involve large public gatherings such as football games," he said.... | |
