Carson boys basketball earns hard fought victory

The Carson High boys basketball team was like the kid who got all he could handle in a schoolyard fight. Carson was like the kid who came away with a bloodied nose, a black eye, bruised and battered with his clothes torn to shreds. But then he tells his friends, "Yeah but you should see the other guy." And most importantly for the Senators they're still standing in the Northern 4A playoff race. After South Tahoe came back to take the lead, Caleb Carter hit a clutch three-pointer to regain the advantage for the Senators and provided some clutch all-around play down the stretch in a 55-53 win at Morse Burley Gym on Saturday. Carson (13-12, 6-6 in the Sierra League) kept pace with North Valleys in the race for the league's fourth and final playoff spot....

Kay Yow, head coach of the North Carolina State women's basketball team, returns to her job today following a two-month leave she took to fight cancer for a third time. Yow's first game back will be on Thursday against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rival Virginia. Yow, 64, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. Two years ago the disease returned and was treated. And in November, Yow left her team after doctors determined her cancer had returned once again. For the past two months, Yow has been receiving chemotherapy along with other new therapies. And while Yow's disease is not gone and her life-extending treatment will continue throughout the season, doctors say her health has improved. And she says she's ready to get back in the game. Yow, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and coached the U.S....

He passes on basketball for baseball

It took the Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School athlete his entire life to come to that conclusion after primarily focusing on basketball, but college baseball recruiters only needed one summer to recognize it. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound Washington Township resident committed to the University of Notre Dame last month. ....

SMU men's basketball coach Matt Doherty signed five players to national letters of intent, SMU announced Thursday. The class includes 6-0 G Mike Walker and 6-9 F Papa Dia, of South Ken (Conn.) School, and 6-4 Ryan Harp (Abilene Cooper), 6-8 F Robert Nyakundi (Arlington Bowie) and 6-8 G/F Alex Malone (Mansfield Timberview). The class is ranked No. 25 by Hoop Scoop. The gem of the class may be Dia, who is a native of St. Louis, Senegal, the same hometown as SMU sophomore center Bamba Fall. Dia picked SMU over Louisville and Oklahoma. Harp is ranked 14th, Malone 22nd and Nyakundi 76th in the state by TexasHoops.com Kate Hairopoulos ....

The same starting five that left the court in Indianapolis with Florida's first national championship will start this season with the No. 1 ranking. The Gators were the runaway choice Monday in The Associated Press' preseason college basketball poll ? no surprise, since they have everyone back for a run at being the first repeat national champion since Duke in 1992. ....

YANKTON - The Mount Marty Lancers defeated the South Dakota Mines Lady Hardrockers 64-59 Friday night in the Lancers' women's basketball season opener, as well as Blue and Gold Days at Mount Marty College. Lancers' head coach Chuck Iverson was pleased with the opening win over a tough team. The Lady Hardrockers consisted of only two returnees and eight freshmen, but their coach Barb Felderman was still pleased with their performance.The Lady Hardrockers got off to the early lead. Bethany Holyoak broke the ice with a three-point play. After the Lancers tied the game, Mines' Karmen Powell dropped a three-pointer and a bucket followed by Melanie Vedvei with a bucket and two free throws boosting them to a five seven point lead 13-6.A small scoring spree followed for the Lancers with Tevan Wenbourne dropping a bucket and Stacey Lickteig dropping a bucket and two free throws and with 10:47 left on the clock the Lancers were within three, the score being 12-15....

Duquesne Basketball Team Receives a Surprise Visit

Sam Ashaolu caught the members of the Duquesne University basketball team off guard when he showed up for practice. Sam Ashaolu is still recovering from gun shot wounds he sustained at a University function. Former Duquesne Dukes player Bryant McAllister refers to Sams appearance at practice as the boost every one needed. McAllister said, I mean Sam is back. Having a guy, you know something tragic like that, and to recover and to be talking and moving and everything, it's a good feeling and you know, everybody's happy. Even though it has been just over a month since the shootings things are getting back to normal on campus. Word of Ashalous progress has added to the renewed sense of calm among the campus community. Dukes basket ball team manager, Jeremy Blythe also feels the impact of Ashalous improvement.It was like real emotional, like all the players, everything seemed so much better with the return of Sam, said Blythe....

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Versatile Oregon forward says he'll play for Duke

Kyle Singler, a 6-foot-8 forward who's one of the most talented and versatile seniors in the nation, announced Friday he has committed to play basketball at Duke. Singler made the announcement at South Medford (Ore.) High, where he averaged 20.5 points and 5.4 rebounds as a junior last season. He comes from an athletic family; his father, Ed, was a football player at Oregon State, where Kyle's mother, Kris, played basketball. All-Star Sports recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons ranks Singler No. 4 overall in his class behind center Kevin Love of Lake Oswego, Ore.; guard Eric Gordon of Indianapolis; and guard O.J. Mayo of Huntington, W.Va. "He's probably the best all-around player outside of Kevin Love," Gibbons said. Arizona and Kansas were Singler's other finalists....

Presentation College men's basketball team has new coach

Vanden Boogaard has been an assistant coach for teams that have played in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament and in the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament game. Vanden Boogaard, who is a native of Kimberly, Wis., has a master's degree in sports administration from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Vanden Boogaard started coaching as a student-assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business marketing. In 2003-04 Vanden Boogaard was an assistant coach at Triton Junior College, where his team went 20-11 and earned a berth in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. Last season Vanden Boogaard was at Oklahoma Panhandle State University where he was the assistant director of athletics, women's golf coach and assistant women's basketball coach....

UT BREAKS GROUND ON PRATT PAVILION BASKETBALL PRACTICE FACILITY

The formal groundbreaking for the new University of Tennessee basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion was today at the building site on the southeast corner of Phillip Fulmer Drive and Lake Loudon Boulevard, adjacent to Thompson-Boling Arena. "Pratt Pavilion will be a great addition for Tennessee's basketball program. One of our goals for Tennessee athletics is to always give our student-athletes the very best in facilities, equipment and other resources needed to excel in their sport," said Mike Hamilton, men's athletics director. Mike Hamilton and other UTAD officials have visited basketball practice facilities around the country including those at Texas, Oklahoma and Florida during the design and planning of Pratt Pavilion. The architects for the Pratt Pavilion project are from Blankenship Design and the general contractor will be Johnston and Gaylon....
