Mitchell, who is investigating steroid use in the sport, said the chances of government involvement will "significantly increase" if they don't cooperate with him.Speaking to owners on the final day of baseball's quarterly meetings, Mitchell said he intends to interview active players and raised the possibility that Congress or other government authorities could compel testimony."I believe it will be in your best interests, and the best interests of baseball, if I can report that I have received full cooperation from your organizations, and from others, in conducting this investigation," Mitchell said in remarks that were released to reporters.Mitchell cited last week's Hall of Fame vote to underscore the importance of his investigation....

The Baseball Column: Five Lessons From 2006

An exciting regular season was followed up by a hectic postseason that turned conventional logic upside down. Before I depart for my annual winter hibernation, I thought I'd share a few things the 2006 baseball season taught me: Don't Believe The Hype Entering the postseason, the Twins and Yankees were getting all of the hype in the American League. The Twins magical turnaround and unlikely Central Division title had many tabbing them for postseason greatness. Getting by Oakland was thought to be a given. King George's Evil Empire meanwhile, appeared to be in full stride of another championship march. Losing to Detroit wasn't even mentioned. Both teams, however, laid an egg and really went down without much of a fight. Rest Can Be Bad By the time the World Series rolled around, it was the Tigers that were carrying the mantle of the prohibited favorite....

The 66-year-old was unanimously chosen by the selection committee to receive the award. The five-member selection committee, including former Yomiuri Giants manager Tetsuharu Kawakami, had also recommended Nippon Ham Fighters manager Trey Hillman for the award for leading the Sapporo-based team to its first Japan Series crown in 44 years....

Nov. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Major League Baseball owners unanimously approved a five-year labor contract with its players union that extends the sport's strengthened drug-testing policy and surcharge on the highest-spending clubs. The teams voted 30-0 on a conference call for the contract, baseball said in a statement. It's the second time in 34 years the sport reached a new agreement without a work stoppage. The current deal, set to expire Dec. 19, was reached hours before a 2002 deadline. Baseball and the union announced the deal Oct. 24 during the World Series to ensure 16 years of labor peace at a time when business is booming. Baseball will generate $5.2 billion in revenue and a record 76 million fans attended games this year, MLB has said. The last work stoppage, a 1994 strike by the players that lasted 232 days, resulted in the cancellation of the World Series....
