New Year's Eve is a high point of the old year and the low point of the new. You go off to a party with expectations of hilarity and camaraderie and wind up in a cacophonous room packed with people shouting at people two feet away. You eat shrimp and drink various grain- or grape-based beverages and drive home legally drunk and wake up at noon with chainsaws in your head and one eyeball half out of its socket. And someone has already turned on the television for the football triple-header. A major hangover, and now you get to sit and watch big bozos bounce off each other and the sponsor's pickup trucks race up steep mountain roads. Then you realize that something you've done for 30 years under the impression that it was fun actually is not....

By staying true to an old-fashioned ideal of devoted customer service while embracing new and innovative sales practices, Dandridge Equipment Inc. in Somerville has become a business model for John Deere dealerships throughout the Mid-South. William Cathey Dandridge started Dandridge Equipment Inc. in 1967 after working for the John Deere Co. for six years. Next year, he will celebrate his 40th year in business. "I built this business on a philosophy of unmatched service," he said. "My personal slogan is, We doze, but seldom close.'" In staying true to this motto, Dandridge's dealership remains one, if not the only, area tractor store that remains open on weekends during planting and harvest seasons. "It has never been a profitable venture to do that," said Mike Cottam, Dandridge general manager and controller....

Camp in a magazine house
Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 1:06:52 PM by Blog57 Team
IT is a forest camp in a magazine house. It had been an ammunition dump, last used to store dynamite nearly 20 years ago. And the dynamite was used to blast granite hills to build the Supa dam. Impounding the waters of River Kali, the dam now generates electricity from deep within the thick forests of northern Karnataka, its outflow driving four other power stations down river before it disgorges into the Arabian Sea at Karwar. Haven for nature enthusiasts Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR), a unit of the tourism department of the Government of Karnataka, was quick to spot the potential of the old magazine house lying disused in the forest near a little village called Ganeshgudi. They promptly acquired it. Today it is a haven for nature enthusiasts and travellers seeking solitude. Peace and tranquillity abound here, surrounded as it is by an extensive reserve forest and perched at an altitude of 1,800 feet....

When Tim Murphy started in facility management, it must have been hard for him to imagine that one day, he'd preside over an arena with boa constrictors slithering around. And yet, there they were, in the Spectrum as part of the recent Nightmares Xtreme Scream Park and its haunted house. There are many events to keep Murphy entertained in the two arenas he oversees as the new vice president and general manager of the Wachovia Center and Spectrum in South Philadelphia. Those events involve not only six professional teams - the Flyers, Sixers, Phantoms, Kixx, Soul and Wings - but also the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney on Ice, three to five Villanova basketball games a year, the Harlem Globetrotters, and Sesame Street Live. There also are concerts, and other sports and entertainment shows; about 400 events a year are presented before 4 million spectators....

Kids' sports expensive

My daughter registered her 4-year-old son in indoor soccer. It cost her $52 for equipment. Hockey equipment would cost $300. She also has two older boys in other sports. Parents with young kids are facing an increasing spiral of costs to keep a child on the ice, court or field. The price of shoes, skates, equipment and uniforms and club fees has skyrocketed. Youth sports have become a big business and it may be too expensive for some parents to raise an active and involved child. The day when a kid could play pick-up ball or hockey on the sandlot or in the park has passed. Adults are obsessed with uniforms, trophies and success. Kids' sports are too organized and less fun.
