Boone Grove's Thill to be honored with two awards

Boone Grove baseball coach Rollie Thill will be taking home two honors from this year's IHSBCA State Baseball Clinic awards banquet. Thill will receive the Coach of the Year Award for District B and the Victory Club Award at the banquet on Friday, January 19, in Indianapolis. "It's nice to feel that my peers feel like I'm doing a good job," Thill said. "I always respect their opinions, and we have a pretty good brotherhood as coaches around here, especially in Northwest Indiana."In four years at Boone Grove, Thill has compiled an 88-30 record. Last year's team went 26-4 and advanced to the sectional finals.WrestlingChesterton 46, LaPorte 25: The Times No. 5 Trojans got pins from Mike Tucker (135), Matt Jackson (160), Ryan Sanchez (215) and Adam Boatright (Hwt.) to defeat the Slicers....

Bukit Jalil Sports School Awards: Daniel and Durratun delight

NATIONAL swimmer Daniel Bego and gymnastics star Durratun Nasihin took the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) top awards in Kuala Lumpur last night. Daniel and Durratun were crowned Sportsboy and Sportsgirl of The Year respectively in a ceremony which marked the 10th year of the awards. Daniel put up a superb performance in the World Youth Championship in Brazil in August where he clinched two silver before winning five gold and two silver in the Asean Schools meet. The other nominees were diver Brian Lomas, cricket captain Suhan Kumar, squash player Mohd Nafizwan Adnan and shuttler Arif Latif. Daniel said the award would inspire him in next months Asian Games in Doha. Durratun, who won four silver in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in March, pipped swimmer Zyanne Lee Huey for the award....

The race is on for this year's Sports Star of the Year Award. Makhaya Ntini, the Protea cricketer and 2005 award winner, Roland Schoeman, the swimming sensation, LJ van Zyl, the 400 metres hurdles star and Oscar Pistorius, the disabled sprint world record breaker are all in line to be honoured by public vote, at the SA Sports Awards at the Theatre on the Track, Midrand on November 30. The SA Sports Awards is a partnership between Sport Recreation SA, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee as well as SABC Sport. Amy-Claire, 11, shines in battle for sports access

A RISING young sports star is calling for a change to schools games lessons to include activities that all pupils can play. Amy-Claire Davies, aged 11, believes schools need to rethink their games policies to ensure that disabled children can participate. The young swimmer, who has cerebral palsy, has been nominated for two achievement gongs in the Shaw Trust's annual STAR awards event, which will be presented by Colin Jackson. Amy-Claire, who lives in Llansamlet, and often has to use a wheelchair, has just given up riding lessons and violin tuition to fit in homework from Birchgrove Comprehensive, School. She said, "We need to rethink sporting provision in schools. ....

Nominees Announced For AMA Sports Awards

PICKERINGTON, Ohio – The fourth annual AMA Sports Awards Banquet will be held Nov. 17, 2006, at The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. Nearly 400 national champions in more than a dozen forms of motorcycle and ATV competition will be honored for their achievements in 2006. The 2006 Awards of Excellence also will be presented to the year's top riders, promoters and members of the media. The banquet will take place at a new venue in 2006, The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, which will be the center of activity during the AMA Las Vegas Invasion weekend. Other weekend events include the AMA Pro Racing Championship Awards Banquet, also at the Rio, and the Maxxis EnduroCross at The Orleans Arena. The AMA Sports evening includes a reception at 6:30 p.m., dinner beginning at 7:30 p.m., and the awards presentations starting at 8:30 p.m....

Robins & Morton wins industry awards for projects nationwide

Birmingham-based general contractor Robins & Morton recently received a total of 16 honors from three industry magazines and three chapters of the Associated Builders and Contractors. Eleven of the awards were for health-care related construction. The three magazines, Southeast Construction, Texas Construction and South Central Construction, gave the company four Award of Merit honors for projects in Orlando, Houston and Auburn, and a Best Sports and Recreation Project award for work done on Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn. ....

New Zealand Snow Sports Annual Awards

The Annual New Zealand Snow Sports Awards were held at a gala dinner event in Christchurch on Saturday night (28 October). Sixteen-year-old Jossi Wells was named Snow Sports Athlete of the Year. Jossi was named the Freeskier of the Year after a season of outstanding results that left organizers in no doubt as to his position as overall Snow Sports Athlete. Snow Sports New Zealand executive member David Scott says the competition for the sport’s top award is extremely fierce. He says a number of talented skiers are emerging on the New Zealand scene, some with strong prospects for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. “The Snow Sport Athlete Of The Year Jossi Wells is a rising star in the world of freeskiing,” said Scott. During this winter Jossi placed 1st in no less than 12 events after completing an outstanding northern hemisphere where he achieved numerous top ten finishes against the top Freeskiers in the world....

Tributes are paid to Daily Press sports journalist Keith Peel

Friends and colleagues have said farewell to Eastern Daily Press sports journalist Keith Peel, who died earlier this month. More than 100 people, including figures from the worlds of local cricket and football, celebrated the life of the 58-year-old sports writer/sub-editor at a humanist service at St Faiths crematorium in Norwich. John Hemsley, from the British Humanist Association, who conducted the service, said the journalist - who worked at the EDP for 39 years including 13 years as sports editor - would have been both bemused and amused by the fact that he was regarded as an oracle when it came to sporting knowledge. He said: "Keith himself would have been incredulous because he didn't realise how popular and respected he was." EDP editor Peter Franzen said he was an old-style journalist, who could be acerbic at times, but held the respect of colleagues in the newsroom....
