| | | 'Extreme Challenge' still offends | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 7:33:34 PM by Blog57 Team | | Love it or hate it, "Most Extreme Challenge" is back for its fifth season. The Spike TV comedy repurposes footage from the Japanese game show, "Takeshi's Castle," and turns it into an unabashedly politically incorrect extreme sports competition. Tonight's premiere episode pits "gay rights" against "the religious right." Poking fun of well-known figures with thinly veiled names like "Rosie McDonalds" and "Nan Coulter," the commentators Kenny Blankenship and Vic Romano make just about every double-entendre possible as the contestants face four impossibly difficult challenges that usually involve running, being hit by something, and getting muddy. The show's humor is lowbrow, more on par with "Jackass" than "Mystery Science Theater 3000." There are more poop jokes than August Strindberg references.... | |

| | | Sports injuries are part of the game | | Posted Wednesday, October 25, 2006 3:18:34 PM by Blog57 Team | | Athletes should not ignore pain. The benefits of sports can be addicting, but like anything else, athletes require rest. If an activity causes recurring pain, chances are the body is being overused, and the potential risks of overuse may outweigh the benefits. According to the National Athletic Trainer's Association, 3050 percent of all sports injuries are caused by overuse. If pain decreases with decreased activity or continuous pain exists without activity, chances are one is overexerting a specific part of their body. But how much activity constitutes overuse? While there is not a specific amount of training defined as overuse, it is based on an individual body's threshold for stress. When one places excess stress on a joint, ligament, tendon or muscle, the body will eventually retaliate.... | |

| | | What readers are saying | | Posted Sunday, October 22, 2006 11:20:05 AM by Blog57 Team | | The life of Ernie Steele, a good old Dawg, captured by Steve Kelley ("Ernie had city's first, and finest, sports joint," Seattle Times, Oct. 18) says that long ago sports wasn't all about the money like it is now. The prime example is Alex Rodriguez. Before leaving Seattle, he said it wasn't about the money. Then he signed with the Texas Rangers for $252 million over 10 years. The Rangers realized the folly of their ways and shipped A-Rod to the Yankees while still owing him a third of his salary for the duration of the contract. Absurd and greedy? You bet. How much does it take to live a comfortable life of wealth? How much is ever going to be enough? Every time the upper limit is pushed, be it by an athlete or movie star, life gets harder for those at the bottom of the ladder.... | |
