| | | Davis Cup in the news Monday 13 November | | Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 11:15:26 PM by Blog57 Team | | Hall 5 at the NEC will be used, and marks a return to Birmingham, the city that has staged several high-profile exciting Davis Cup ties in the past, for the first time since GBR defeated Thailand 3-2 in a World Group Play-off tie in September 2002. Perhaps the most memorable tie staged in Birmingham was the hosts' 3-2 defeat at the hands of USA in a World Group first round tie in 1999, although that tie, like the Thailand one, was staged at the nearby National Indoor Arena. The last tie staged at the NEC was GBR's GBR's 5-0 defeat of Portugal in a Europe/Africa Zone Group I second round tie in April 2001. The capacity for the tie will be 7,700 and tickets are on sale as from today, Monday 13 November, and can be booked by calling The NEC Box Office on 0870 908 3040 or on-line at www.necgroup.co.uk.... | |

| | | Davydenko win boosts Cup prospects | | Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 7:41:31 PM by Blog57 Team | | Nikolay Davydenko raced into the Paris Masters quarterfinals and enhanced his chances of playing singles in the Davis Cup final with a 6-2 6-2 win over Russian compatriot Dimitry Tursonov. Czech defending champion Tomas Berdych also wasted little time in reaching the last eight with a 6-3 6-3 defeat of America's Robby Ginepri in 65 minutes. Davydenko, the Russian fourth seed, took six minutes longer to despatch Tursonov, who edged him out of the singles line-up in the Davis Cup semifinal against the United States. The two brisk contests provided stark contrast to Wednesday's action at the Bercy arena when the day's program did not end until 0100. Davydenko's impressive win over the America-based Tursunov should mean that he will line-up alongside Marat Safin in the singles for the final against Argentina in Moscow in December.... | |

| | | A cup of wisdom | | Posted Wednesday, November 01, 2006 11:32:28 AM by Blog57 Team | | Nick Davis was reading a now-forgotten quotation printed on his paper coffee cup last year when he noticed the fine print. It was an invitation to have his, or any Starbucks customer's, own pithy saying printed on the chain's coffee cups. So Davis submitted this quote: “Voting is the method by which we purchase the right to be critical of government and politicians." Out of thousands of submissions, his entry resonated with the nation's largest coffee-shop franchise. Since May, Starbucks customers nationwide have been mulling the Lawrence resident's reflection as No. 98 in more than 180 quotes featured in the chain's “The Way I See It" campaign, described on the Starbucks Web site as a collection of thoughts and expressions by “notable figures." Davis, a 61-year-old former marketing representative who moved to Lawrence two years ago after several decades in San Francisco, shrugs off the idea of being dubbed notable.... | |
